Early Phillips 3 speed bicycle modified by a young John Olsen into a trials bike. Read about one of his adventures on the bike below:
"And besides, on this bike, I learned how not to jump. Near my
brother's house, in Rochester MN, I found a great dirt jump.
Since I was on that bike, equipped with luxurious suspension,
I rolled down into the drop, came back up, and into the air!
Where I heard a funny sound, and realized that the threaded
rod that I used to hold the top of the springs got pushed
forward off of the fork crown by the dropping front wheel,
thus meaning that when I landed, I would have NO springs.
Sure enough, when I landed, the front wheel jammed into the
bottom of the fork crown and stopped instantly. I proceeded
forward, what with inertia and all, and used my young and
fresh gonads to bend the steel stem 45 degrees. I then
decided to lay down for an hour or so. This was a blank time
in my life, involving bleeding from places that should not
bleed. Eventually, my father found me and helped me home.
So actually, that bike DID, in fact, nearly kill me, or at
least my unborn progeny."
